Meet a Teacher: Susan Snyder (Qigong)

July 31st, 2009 by Kat

Kat here, with one more installment of “Meet a Teacher.”

At the Teachstreet world headquarters, we recently spoke with Susan Snyder about all things Qigong. I’ll let the video speak for itself, but boy, I was so impressed to hear of the healing effects of Qigong (pronounced CHEE-gong) in everyday life! This interview is certainly one you don’t want to miss.

To learn more about Susan’s practice, you can check out her profile on Teachstreet.

There are quite a few qigong classes being held right now. You can take a class from Susan or find qigong listings in your location. Take a class!

Must Read – Hacking Education discussion summary

Hacking Education - Union Square Ventures

Hacking Education - Union Square Ventures

2009 is racing by — I can’t believe it’s been ~5 months since I was fortunate to attend the Hacking Education gathering in New York City, assembled and hosted by the amazing team at Union Square Ventures.  I really don’t have much to add to the summary that the USV team has posted, but if you are interested in helping create the future of education, I couldn’t more strongly recommend that you take 20-30 minutes to read it complely from the first words to the end of the comment thread (it may be the best comment thread I’ve eve read!).  While present in the room, I was clearly aware that I’m incredibly ‘new’ to the world of education transformation, but that doesn’t diminish my excitement about the contributions that TeachStreet will make in opening up the world of lifelong learning to the Web and beyond — taking the time to re-read the summary only gets me more excited about the potential impact of our work, and the fellowship of innovators that we’re proud to be among.

Winners of the Arts and Crafts Contest!

July 27th, 2009 by Joseph

We have such great community, especially in the arts and crafts space. From knitting teachers and crochet teachers to glass art teachers and pottery teachers — they all came out and participated in our Arts and Crafts Contest 2009 which ended last week. In order to qualify, teachers needed to list a class and add the Etsy Mini widget to their profiles, easy as that.

The spirit of the contest was to help teachers and sellers alike know there are other means of income that compliment each other, especially during these economic times. So if you can teach and sell the products you make — it’s a win-win situation as Marlo Miyashiro mentions when talking about her experience with both TeachStreet and Etsy. Thanks again for everyone who participated and here are the winners.

And the winner of the Apple iPhone 3GS ($200 Apple Giftcard) is:

Help Biznik finish their movie about entrepreneurs

July 24th, 2009 by Dave

Our friends at Biznik are creating a movie called SHINE, that’s all about entrepreneurs — what fuels their passions and gets them out of bed every day — it’s pretty awesome.  Here’s the trailer for it, and if you’re interested in getting involved, more information is below:

SHINE Official Trailer 1 from Dan McComb on Vimeo.

SHINE is the untold story of entrepreneurs struggling to build the businesses of their dreams in the depths of recession. Based on 250 interviews with mostly small entrepreneurs conducted on May 6, 2009, SHINE introduces us to a wide spectrum of entrepreneurship. From a toothless cowboy poet to a Stanford engineer who sold his business for $500 million, we learn that growing a business is more often about passion than it is money, and why entrepreneurs work long hours for low pay, few benefits, facing great uncertainty. Dozens of interviews, including a rare conversation with iStockphoto founder Bruce Livingstone, reveal the high personal price that some entrepreneurs are willing to pay for success in this sober yet inspiring look at the brave thinkers and creative doers at the heart of the economy.

Where is SHINE headed?

When complete, they’ll be entering SHINE into film festivals, and winning awards will help get them distribution for the film. That’s why they need your help to make SHINE the extraordinary film it has the potential to be.

How can I help?

They’ve created 3 great incentives for you to help raise the remaining $ they need to complete the film:

1. $40 gets your photo in the SHINE title slide, on the SHINE website and and unsigned copy of the SHINE poster.
2. $100 gets you all the above plus a signed copy of poster and invitation to exclusive screening wth the filmmakers.
3. $250 gets you all the above plus a limited-edition signed copy of the DVD with festival packaging designed by Anvil.

Go contribute to SHINE now!

Meet a Teacher: Anita Manuel (Piano)

July 22nd, 2009 by Kat

At Teachstreet, we’re always looking to hear about what our teachers are up to, why they love to teach (and learn), and what they are truly passionate about.

We recently spoke with Seattle piano teacher Anita Manuel about her love of the piano. If you’re 5 or 50, Anita can sure teach you a thing or two about tickling the ivories! She shared her wealth of knowledge with us last week, including information about what type of piano/keyboard a beginning student should purchase, what types of books she uses with students, and about her classes for both children and adults.

You can watch the interview above, learn more about piano teacher Anita Manuel, or check out great piano lessons near you.

More of our interview series will be posted within the coming week. Stay tuned for more great interviews!

Intro to TeachStreet video from Chris Pirillo

July 17th, 2009 by Dave

Several weeks ago we blogged about our ‘TeachStreet win’ at the WTIA Fast Pitch Forum — today, our friend Chris Pirillo posted the video of the TeachStreet talk — it’s actually a pretty good 5-6 minute intro to what we’re building with TeachStreet, and why it may matter to you (and millions of other folks like you).

Enjoy — and, thank you to Chris — check out his tech/community site — it’s about as good as they get. And, if you’re in Seattle and you’re interested in technology, blogging and/or what’s new and exciting, you really should attend a conference he puts on called Gnomedex — it’s in mid-August each year, and I try to never miss it!
