I have been practicing vinyasa flow yoga for a year and a half. In addition, to eating right for my blood type, which is A and yoga is one of the best forms of exercise for blood type A. I have lost and kept off over 40 pounds until recently. I started "Hot" yoga one week ago and I have gaind 5 pounds in the past week too!!! I have not changed my eating or anything else about my lifestyle. It's possible that it is muscle mass... but why? How does Vinyasa yoga cause weight loss and Hot yoga cause weight gain? I am a certified yoga instructor aswell and I have never heard nor experienced this until this week. I felt "thicker" after the first session and I thought to myself, "maybe its just water weight?" but I sweat like you would not believe. I can't figure it out!? I regret to say but I am stopping Hot yoga and sticking with vinyasa yoga because I know it works!

I have been doing Bikram yoga for almost 3 weeks now, trying to go at least 3 times/week. I have also noticed that I've gained weight. I run 4 times a week between 8-12 miles/week and have continued that regimen even with the yoga. I am 5'5" and already weighed around 150lbs before yoga. Now I am pushing 160lbs and my jeans are feeling really tight. My body is feeling firmer and I'm pretty sure that it is muscle, but I don't really like not being able to cross my legs comfortably! I guess I just assumed that it would help me lose weight. I'm relieved to hear that I am not alone, I was actually starting to question my thyroid, too! Too funny!

A lot of people are saying that they have gained weight from doing Bikram yoga; I would argue that this is good (provided they feel good) because it is probably muscle weight. I love Bikram: I tend to have edema and doing Bikram has helped shed my body of excess water. It has also noticeably regulated my appetite and energy levels, and my cravings for cheesy/chocolaty things have diminished. This is just my experience, of course, so I am not saying that Bikram would be a positive experience for everyone. If I were to give any general advice about it though, I would tell you not to worry so much about the weight--notice how your body feels, how your muscles appear more defined, how your posture changes, etc. If weight loss is your sole goal, Bikram may not be for you.

It seems to me that men lose weight, and women gain weight, under Bikram.

Could it be because the ideal male form is to be without fat (lean and ripped), and the ideal female form is to be fleshy and curvy (at least in the majority of cultures worldwide, and even in western culture for much of history. it is only a recent obsession with being thin, due to the nation being obese. The women that are gaining weight, one of them said she went from 120 to 129 or 127 ..... oh no! it's the end of the world! (sarcasm). 95% of the global population probably thinks you look better now than you did at 120. it's just in your mind that you have to weigh some low number, which is ridiculous. weight is not a measure of health. it's how you feel, how your skin shines, is your hair lustrous, is your posture and spine good, etc.

I've been practicing Bikram Yoga for a few months and I've gained weight - 5 lbs so far! It's fine with me because I'm not trying to lose weight and I've never felt better in my entire life!
