Football season has just gotten underway and as an avid Seattle Seahawk fan, that means Sundays filled with football, food, fans, games, and most importantly tailgating! I would call tailgating a good pre-game warm up for fans to get into their groove for the game.  And there’s always been an art to planning a tailgating event and doing it right.  There’s three basic stages in tailgating: (1) Preparation, (2) Tailgating, and (3) The Game.

Preparation

This is probably the most crucial step when setting up a day of tailgating.  It’s similar to breakfast, if you skip it, the rest of the day will not go as smoothly. First, have the essentials. At a minimum, you have to have food, beer, and a large vehicle. But its always better to be prepared with the things you may not remember, so check out this tailgating check list. Just a word of advice from experience, here’s a short list of things never to forget before leaving:

  • Food prepared for grilling or eating
  • Utensils and plates
  • Beverages in cooler
  • Load large vehicle with BBQ grill, television/radio, extension cord, and chairs
  • Football gear (i.e. jerseys, hats, signs, etc.)

Tailgating

Once your preparing the food and people are starting to trickle in, the festivities are now to begin.  This will include watching/listening to other football games going on, silly drinking games (i.e. beer pong or flip cup), playing football, and obviously, eating. It’s time to enjoy the fruits of your labor earlier that morning.

After the excitement of tailgating, you have to get your game face on for the actual game.  Sometimes you forget that there’s actually a football game that day. Once you’re ready, pump yourself up, grab your signs and head into the stadium cheering your lungs out.  Win or lose, it’ll always be a fun day of football.

Go Hawks! But what about the class that teaches Matt Hasselbeck what to do without Nate Burleson? What to do... what to do?
  • Annie
Fun post! I don't know anything about football, but I do know about cheering really loud and having parties involving food and alcohol, so I can still appreciate!! Gotta take some of these classes!
  • Annie, there are no bunnies involved in Seahawks football... just lots of choking, snivelling and fumbling...
  • Josh
Remember when your tailgating you must put any and all alcoholic drinks in a solo cup, and/or in any other unmarked cup like it. If the event staff or cops see you with a open beer the will take it from you!
  • Thanks for the advice Joseph. The Hawks need all the cheering they can get this season!
  • josh, thanks for the tip on the solo cups -- big red cups is the preference, but then again it just yells "beer" you know.
  • Jonathan
I hope the Seahawks teach the 49ers a lesson this Sunday!

You should also note, after careful planning you need proper execution or else the plan will fail.

side note: To fully experiance tailgating one must have a truck, that way you can nickname it "The Bar."
