Lifelong Learner in Seattle

August 17th, 2008 by sam

In addition to e-mail, Facebook, and Google, what websites do you use daily?

In asking a half dozen friends this question over the weekend, I was surprised how different everyone’s answers were. Yelp. Perez Hilton. Hulu. Each were sites mentioned by multiple people, but everyone’s short lists varied drastically, which lead me to the conclusion that for as many sites as we visit on the web, the number of sites we identify with and visit daily, is actually a very small number.

As many Seattle area teachers know, Angel, also known by the moniker “missrasmussen” is someone for whom TeachStreet is on her short list of sites she identifies with.

Angel (aka “missrasmussen”)

Who’s Angel?

Angel is a lifelong learner born and raised on Whidbey Island, who now lives in the North Seattle. As she put it, she has “always loved learning new things,” which is probably why she graduated high school at 16, college at 19 and has taken classes ever since.

It’s probably also why she has been one of TeachStreet’s most active members since the beginning: searching for the newest offerings, asking teachers questions, and of course, taking classes in Seattle.

In the last month alone, Angel used TeachStreet to speak to several dozen Seattle teachers and sign up for a number of classes. When I asked why she uses TeachStreet, she told me it was because no other site allows her to find more classes in a single place. She said “TeachStreet is amazing. I can find everything. It’s Google for whatever I want to learn.”

What’s next on Angel’s list of classes to take?

Well, as the list is always growing, it’s hard to keep up with Angel’s class schedule, but when I spoke the other day, she said she’ll definitely be signing up to take a boat building class at the Center for Wooden Boats (an interest sparked by the fact that her Stepfather was a boat mechanic) and a viniyoga class from Suzanne Stephens

Enjoy the classes, Angel. Be sure to let us all know what you thought once you’ve taken them, too, by writing a couple of reviews! After all, reviews (good or bad) help everyone make better informed decisions as to which classes to take.

And on a more personal note, from all of us here at TeachStreet, thanks for the continued support! We have a long way to go. Really, we’re just getting started. But we’re also grateful for where we are, and we know we wouldn’t be here without voracious learners and avid supporters such as yourself. So thanks!

I, for one, prefer ‘missrasmussen’ over Angel — hearkens back to my favorite librarian, Miss Rothermel! Really, Angel, you’re about as good as they come — we love your participation on TeachStreet, and I hope we can continue to improve the community to make it that much more fun (and educational) for you.

Now, when are you going to start teaching some classes yourself?

At a minimum, you could probably teach an “Introduction to TeachStreet” coffee starter class ;-)

That’s awesome to hear! Love the fact that Angel has been so involved in TeachStreet and hopefully we can make this community more and more exciting for people like her. Good stuff!
